Blue topaz, a captivating semiprecious gemstone, is a prized member of the topaz family. Topaz is a mineral species that can appear in various colors, including white, red, pink, and, most notably, blue. Among these, blue topaz is the most sought-after. Naturally occurring blue topaz is exceedingly rare. When found in nature, topaz typically exhibits a very pale blue hue. Most blue topaz on the market started as colorless or pale topaz and was treated with heat and irradiation to achieve its vibrant blue color. While the treatment enhances the color, the topaz itself remains a natural gemstone. There are three main variations of blue topaz: Swiss Blue, Sky Blue and London Blue Topaz. Swiss Blue is characterized by a bright blue color with a light tone and light to moderate saturation, making it a popular choice for those who prefer a vivid, cheerful blue. London Blue is known for its deep, dark blue color with moderate to dark tone and saturation, offering a sophisticated and elegant appearance. Sky Blue is the lightest, featuring a light blue color with light tone and saturation, providing a subtle and serene look. Blue topaz is a durable gemstone suitable for various types of jewelry. However, it should be handled with care to prevent scratching and damage from hard knocks. Blue topaz is often associated with clarity of thought, communication, and tranquility. It is believed to bring calmness and balance to the wearer. Due to its stunning blue hues and durability, blue topaz is used in a variety of jewelry pieces, including rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Its different shades provide versatility, complementing both casual and formal attire. Whether opting for the bright Swiss Blue, the deep London Blue, or the light and airy Sky Blue, blue topaz provides an enchanting and versatile option for gemstone enthusiasts.

Blue Topaz is the birthstone for December.

Blue Topaz gemstones are softer than diamonds as the Mohs Scale of Hardness ranges from 1 to 10 with 10 being the hardest, diamonds are rated at a 10 and blue topazes are rated at an 8.0. So it is a durable gemstone for jewelry as long as it is treated with care to protect it against scratching and hard knocks.

Blue Topaz jewelry can be cleaned using warm soapy clean water and a soft bristled brush. Don't sleep or shower with it, remove it and put it in your storage container since sleep can be very hard on jewelry. Avoid activities that expose it to chemicals such as hair products, cleaning supplies, and other commonly used items.

There are three variations of treated blue topaz. They are known as “Swiss Blue”, “London Blue” and "Sky Blue" topaz. Swiss Blue is a bright blue topaz with a light tone and light to moderate saturation. London Blue is a dark blue topaz with a moderate to dark tone and saturation. Sky Blue Topaz is the lightest of the versions with a light tone and light saturation.
