Gemstone engagement rings are a beautiful way to express your one-of-a-kind love story. But with so many uniquely stunning options, how do you choose the right one for you? Find your perfect gemstone ring style with this guide, featuring expert tips on how to choose your center gemstone and key details you should know about the most popular gemstone engagement ring options.
How To Choose Your Gemstone
The right gemstone for your engagement ring will work for both your personal tastes and your practical needs. Your personal tastes will help you choose what you want in terms of color, shape, shine, and meaning. Your lifestyle dictates what you should look for when it comes to practicality.
Some gemstones are more durable than others, making them more practical for everyday wear. One way to measure gemstone durability is with the Mohs Hardness Scale, which ranks gemstone hardness on a scale of 1 to 10. Diamonds are the hardest gemstone, earning a 10 out of 10, but anything with a 7 or higher can be considered fairly durable.
How much you care about durability is a matter of personal preference. If you want a very durable, low-maintenance center stone, choose a center stone with an 8 or higher on the Mohs Scale. If you don’t mind being a bit more careful with your ring, you can consider gemstones with a 7 or higher.
In general, we don’t recommend gemstones that rank lower than a 7 on the Mohs Scale for engagement rings. This includes gemstones like opal, moonstone, lapis lazuli, pearl, and turquoise. Any gemstone that is softer than quartz, a 7 on the Mohs Scale, can be easily scratched by the quartz particles found in household dust. You can still choose a less durable option if you like for fashion or a not-everyday-wear ring, but keep in mind the extra level of care required when wearing softer stone rings.
Expert Advice: Avoiding harsh chemicals like hand sanitizers and household cleaners is always a good idea when wearing gemstone rings.
Ruby Engagement Rings
Rubies are lush red gems with a fitting meaning for a soon-to-be-married couple. This beautiful stone is a symbol of passion and strength. With a 9 on the Mohs Scale, rubies are also physically strong, making them an excellent choice for daily wear.
Blue Sapphire Engagement Rings
Sapphires were once the most popular engagement ring center stone–and it’s easy to see why. Sapphires are not only beautiful but incredibly tough, earning a 9 on the Mohs Scale. Sapphires also come in a rainbow of colors, each of which has its own special meaning. Blue sapphires, the most popular choice for engagement rings, are a symbol of loyalty and happiness in love. Other top options for engagement rings include white sapphires, a symbol of protection and luck, and pink sapphires, a symbol of love and compassion.

One of the precious gemstones, known for their lush green color, emeralds are a symbol of luck, peace, and true love. With a rating of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs Scale, emeralds are fairly durable. Yet, their unique interior vein-like structure can make them prone to chipping, so emerald rings are best for those who can wear them with care.
Peridot Engagement Rings

Moissanite Engagement Rings
Moissanite is the perfect choice for someone who appreciates the clarity and high shine of colorless diamonds, yet wants an alternative engagement ring at a more affordable price. These transparent, colorless stones are even more brilliant than diamonds. And with a 9.25 on the Mohs Scale, moissanites are also a similarly durable engagement ring choice that is durable.
