How much you care about durability is a matter of personal preference. If you want a very durable, low-maintenance center stone, choose a center stone with an 8 or higher on the Mohs Scale. If you don\u2019t mind being a bit more careful with your ring, you can consider gemstones with a 7 or higher.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In general, we don\u2019t recommend gemstones that rank lower than a 7 on the Mohs Scale for engagement rings<\/a>. This includes gemstones like opal, moonstone, lapis lazuli, pearl, and turquoise. Any gemstone that is softer than quartz, a 7 on the Mohs Scale, can be easily scratched by the quartz particles found in household dust. You can still choose a less durable option if you like for fashion or a not-everyday-wear ring, but keep in mind the extra level of care required when wearing softer stone rings.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
